DescriptionThis is the third lesson of Duke Robillard's Swingin' the Blues series of guitar lessons. The goal for this series is to transition a player familiar with standard 12 bar blues to more melodic and complex jazzy blues / swing playing. The series first focuses on jazzy blues and swing rhythm guitar to lay a solid foundation and then teaches passing chords, comping, riffing, double stops and lead guitar. The series ends by putting all of the new knowledge to practice in three songs: Swingin' with Lucy Mae, Lester Leaps In and Moten Swing.
In Lesson 3, Duke focuses on jazz guitar comping: punctuating within a chord progression to add rhythmic and harmonic variation. Duke discusses:
similarities between jazz guitar comping and jazz piano comping
variations of the I (Bb7) chord leading the the IV chord
picking technique
using the sharp 9 and flat 9 as passing chords
history of 9th and 7th chords chords in blues and early jazz
using chords to create melodic lines
